The origins of the locality of Denia, in Alicante, Spain starts in the era of the Iberian towns, phoenicians, and Romans who named this city Dianum and made it one of the most important connection points with northern Africa. In the 5th century the visigoths were who dominated this region until the year 713 when it became islamic. The moors gave it the name of Deniya. In 1036 it became the capital of the Kingdom of Taifa of Denia and grew in size due to it´s arab denomination until the conquering of Jaime I in 1244. From there until today it came to be called Denia and became the town in the 14th century. In the year 1612 it was given the title of city.
In the Archeological Museum of Denia it will take you through history to the this Mediterrenean town from the begining of it´s urban adventure to other milleniems ago. It´s history and archeology are tied to the port since it was mainly a commerce city where many boats came through.
Other points where you should make a stop in are the ice factory, Les Dressanes, Explanada Cervantes in honor of the writer who disembarked in 1580 in Denia after his captivity in Argelia, and of course the fishing docks where every tourist can watch the fish auction. |
